Botulinum toxin is currently the world’s leading non-surgical aesthetic procedure that is used for both women and men. Botulinum toxin is a non-permanent injectable that works by relaxing the contraction of muscles and blocking nerve impulses. Muscles can no longer contract as before, resulting in a more relaxed, soft look to the treated area.
People in the thirties age group with limited exposure to sunlight usually show signs of ageing in their eye and temple area first, with ‘crow's feet’ and some bulging of the eyelids. If at this point there is minimal lost volume then Botulinum toxin can usually smooth unwanted lines.
During the 40s and 50s the middle of the face starts to shift and a person’s cheeks become deflated as they lose some of their fat, more laughter lines set in and jowls may start to form. Botulinum toxin will often greatly improve these symptoms of ageing. If symptoms are more severe, other minimal lifting procedures or cosmetic options may be used in combination with Botulinum toxin to give the best results.
What is the difference between Botulinum toxin & Fillers?
Botulinum toxin relaxes the muscles to help make lines disappear and slows down the formation of new lines, but it does not add volume to the face. Most Fillers on the other hand, temporarily add volume to the face and plump up creases. Without Botulinum toxin, the muscles are still active and therefore they are not prevented from allowing the skin to wrinkle deeper, or to stop new wrinkles from forming.
Botulinum toxin is used to help treat the following;
1. To decrease the appearance of wrinkles, such as crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, creases at the brow and fine lines between the eyebrows
2. To erase frown lines around the mouth
3. It can be used under the arms and other areas to help combat excessive sweating
4. It helps lift the tip of the nose
5. Botulinum toxin is also helpful with many other non-cosmetic ailments such as back and neck pain, migraine and even some forms of depression.
How long does Botulinum toxin last?
Effects of treatment last from four to six months. Most patients require further treatment to remove wrinkles and lines as they begin to reappear. However, in the long term when they do return, the wrinkles and creases are less severe as the muscles become trained to relax through Botulinum toxin treatment.
How is the Botulinum toxin performed?
Botulinum toxin treatment requires no real anesthesia and only takes a short time to perform. Botulinum toxin is injected into the muscle in the treatment area, using a fine needle in order to minimize discomfort and maximize accuracy. Patients should try to avoid alcohol, taking aspirin and using any anti-inflammatory medication before treatment to help minimize any bruising. Discomfort that may occur during the treatment application can be reduced with the use of a numbing cream and/or ice packs.
What to expect immediately after Botulinum toxin;
You may experience minimal swelling and slight redness at the injection points which will pass within 2-4 hrs. A normal routine can be resumed almost immediately; however you should avoid activities in which you would lean forward for prolonged periods during the first 24 hours. Makeup can be worn after four hours.
When will I see the results of my Botulinum toxin treatment?
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, results often depend on the age of the patient. Results will begin to show between 3-7 days following treatment.
